The Mavs are 11-3 this season when holding their opponent under a field-goal percentage of 45.0 ……
Creating Some Chaos In Mavs Donuts
DONUT 1: MFFL Warning Cards ...
Within seven minutes of publishing last night's story on the "MFFL Warning Cards,'' I received (via Facebook, Twitter, text and email) 15 requests along the lines of, "Fish, can you get me one of those?''
They would make quite a stocking stuffer, wouldn't they?
In 2005, the NBA quietly established a policy for misbehaving fans called the "warning card.'' The card reads:
"You are being issued a warning that the comments, gestures and/or behaviors that you have directed at players, coaches, game officials and/or other spectators constitute excessive verbal abuse and are in violation of the NBA Fan Code of Conduct. This is the first and only warning that you will receive. If, after receiving this warning, you verbally abuse any player, coach, game official or spectator, you will be immediately rejected from the arena without refund."
The policy moved into the spotlight this month with a Pistons-Bucks game in which Brandon Jennings returned to Milwaukee (top right) and a note on a warning at a Knicks-Cavs game last year in which Cleveland fans were harassing Tyson Chandler (above).
The Dallas Mavericks have these cards available to use as well. But at Wednesday's game against the visiting Memphis Grizzlies at American Airlines Center, Mavs staffers will also make available to very select fans who are the most "Rowdy, Proud and Loud'' the parody "MFFL Warning Cards.''
Those cards will look like this on the back ...
And on the front will feature a Jerry West-esque logo featuring Dirk Nowitzki ... along with a Dirk signature.
The Mavs don't want to encourage their fans to "violate the NBA Fan Code of Conduct.'' What the Mavs want from their fans is written on the back of the card:
"You are being issued this card because conduct and or behavior you are displaying while viewing this game are exactly inline with the CODE OF CONDUCT OF A TRUE MFFL (MAVS FAN FOR LIFE).
"This behavior can be contagious and therefore you must be rewarded and informed that in doing so, you could be converting everyone around you to act in the same manner.
"You and you along are responsible for the choas (sic) that has been created by your MFFL actions.''
Yes, the word "chaos'' is misspelled. (DallasBasketball.com is assured the team will get that corrected in the next printing). But for now, that's probably OK. The Mavs are asking you to be a yeller, not a speller.
By the way: A Mavs staffer tells me, "We won't be handing these out like candy. Two here, three there, to fans who are the most Rowdy, Proud and Loud.''
So these cannot be gifted. They must be earned ... on "choatic'' moment at a time.
DONUT 2: No more sick days ...
The Mavs got back to work on Monday, one day after taking some time off following Saturday's 106-93 blowout of the Bucks -- a feat accomplished without the contributions of coach Rick Carlisle and star Dirk Nowitzki.
Both were back to normal on Monday at the AAC, though Nowitzki seems to be suffering from a football hangover.
"I felt a lot better come Sunday,'' Nowitzki said, "until I watched the Cowboy game. Then I got sick again.''
Nowitzki is, of course, a big supporter of the local teams -- even after Dallas' come-from-ahead loss to the Packers. He's also a supporter of what his teammates did in dealing with another team from Wisconsin in the Bucks.
"I'm glad the boys pulled it out,'' said Dirk, who throughout the weekend "was struggling to keep stuff in and fluids in.''
The bug is gone now, allowing Nowitzki to be back in the mix, though he reported his "legs felt a little heavy in practice, but it was good to get a sweat in ... If I feel a lot better tomorrow, then by Wednesday hopefully I'll be 100 percent."
We've got more from Monday's session - including Dirk's high praise of B-Wright - here.
DONUT 3: Shawn Marion's dentist ...
A video look inside Shawn Marion's mouth?
Yup. A video look inside Shawn Marion's mouth.
DONUT 4: The Mavs-watchin' hangout in North Dallas ...
Our North Dallas hangout for sports and live music? It's Red Rock Bar & Grill! They help make DB.com what it is ... thanks, guys!
Oh, and thanks for that biggest-in-Texas 200-inch TV screen, too!
DONUT 5: In the water ...
Smart-alecky DB.com contributor Chuck Cooperstein says that given that Cowboys meltdown vs. Green Bay (which I write about here), the Mavs losing leads of 17 and 18 points and losing on buzzer-beater shots at Atlanta and Golden State "doesn't seem so bad.''
Me? I think it's seems bad ... seems like an epidemic ... and seems like maybe there is something in the DFW water that needs purifying.
DONUT 6: Kaman's drummer ...
Old pal Chris Kaman was disgruntled two years ago in New Orleans. Is on record as saying he was disgruntled last year in Dallas. Now this year he's in LA and is saying the Lakers have handed him a role that is not what he envisioned.
Chris certainly marches to the beat of a different drummer. (A heavily-bearded and heavily-armed drummer.) But when you discover everyone else you encounter is marching one way and you are in conflict with that ...
Maybe you should consider altering your taste in music?
DONUT 7: Top 10 Stat-Tastic Takes ...
In case you missed em: Monday's Donuts feature Our Top 10 Stat-Tastic Mavs Takes with an advanced-analytics feel. Dig in!
DONUT 9: Fish and Frisco! ...
I'm proud to remind you that in addition to the work we do with Dallas Mavericks here, on FOX Sports Southwest and on 105.3 The Fan, I'm teaming up with the Texas Legends this year to serve as the color analyst for the D-League Mavs affiliate on 20-plus televised games.
Presented by Veracruz and shown on KTXD 47, the telecasts will have an interactive flavor and feature R.J.Choppy as the play-by-play man, yours truly on color and Legends assistant coach Travis Blakeley offering insights from the bench.
The assignment is a perfect compliment to what we do here on DB.com. We'll get a close-up look on what's going on "down on the farm'' for the Mavs ... and we'll present that look to you live on TV.
This is where Ricky Ledo is learning to play and where a couple of other Mavs kids might end up as well. It's a great place to hang out with the gang, to take the family, and to watch the development of the next generation of Mavs.
We've got a game on Wednesday night live from Frisco. For ticket info go to the Texas Legends website and if you are in the neighborhood, please come by and say hello!
DONUT 9: Dally's confab ...
Late last week, Carlisle huddled with Sam Dalembert after practice for a one-on-one confab.
We now know what was discussed.
Rick posed a simple question to his veteran center. Paraphrasing: Why does your energetic and even explosive work in practice fail to carry over to real games?
Coach is searching for answers. Dalembert himself seems to sincerely doing the same.
But let's be honest: Short of injury limitations (and Sam has had some of those, especially with a nagging rib problem), no one should have to go too deep to ask themselves why energy and effort doesn't transfer.
When energy and effort don't transfer, it's because "energy and effort'' don't represent your natural state.
DONUT 10: Quoteboard ...
"He did a good job. I was highly impressed with some of the actual plays he drew up during timeouts. He was doing some good s---. I'm like, 'Where the f--- have these plays been?'' - Shawn Marion, with a funny take on head-coaching temp Monte Mathis' work in Saturday's Carlisle-less win over the Bucks.
DONUT 11: Spanish lesson ...
Jose Calderon teaches some Spanish to the fellas:
DONUT 12: The Final Word ...
The worst thing for Dirk about missing that Saturday game and watching from home?
"It was difficult listening to Bob Ortegel on TV,'' Nowitzki joked about his friend. "It was like having a root canal.''
Maybe he should've ridden over to the dentist with Trix?
