Thursday Mavs Donuts: Leading When It Matters

Thursday Mavs Donuts: Leading When It Matters

Last night in Indy, the Mavs led the Pacers by as many as 23 in the third quarter and led going into the fourth before the non-guaranteed guys mopped up a 92-85 preseason win. This is getting to be a habit, and a good one, as we detail in Mavs Donuts ...

DONUT 1: Mavs 92, Pacers 85 ...

For the veteran Dallas Mavericks, it's very much preseason. So Jose Calderon can be patient with his hammy. Shawn Marion can sit out the Monday game. And Vince Carter can take a "rest day'' on Wednesday in Indy as the Mavs beat the Pacers 92-85.

The Pacers, by the way, are no different. They played without standouts Paul Georgem Roy Hibbert and David West.

Yes, it's the preseason. But ...

"We're basically two weeks from playing an opening game, and in the big picture for me I'm looking at health, I'm looking at keeping guys fresh and giving guys enough of a rest that need it and getting them enough work, too,'' Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "You know, there's a lot of things to keep your eye on right now.''

For instance ...

DONUT 2: Plus/minus ...

Dallas is 2-2 in the preseason. But in each of their four games, the Mavs have led entering the final quarter. Those first three quarters are when the regulars generally play (along with rookie point Gal Mekel, of course) and those first three quarters are when Dirk Nowitzki does what Dirk does. Example from last night: In 24 minutes, Nowitzki was a plus-26.

In fact, the Mavs starters had a combined plus/minus of plus-94 in Indy.

With no disrespect to the non-guaranteed mop-up guys who have been on the floor to finish games, what Carlisle's true rotation guys are doing is what "to keep your eye on right now.''

DONUT 3: Prokhorov is a pirate?! ...

A story about the ties between the Brooklyn Nets and the new Tom Hanks movie "Captain Phillips.'' And no, the big reveal isn't that Mikhail Prokhorov is a pirate.

DONUT 6: Dreamweavers ...

Remember when Rick Carlisle told DB.com that the Mavs continue to try to "stay ahead of the curve'' when it comes to advances in technology that can impact basketball? Here goes: Dallas is going to be the first NBA team to do "sleep analysis.''

For me, by the way, the best way to coerce myself into taking a nap is to put baseball on the TV.

DONUT 7: OO no, OJ ...
Smile
Old pal O.J. Mayo is off to another new start, this time in Milwaukee. With it comes the unveiling of another new jersey number for Mayo, who wore 32 in Memphis and was again 32 last year in Dallas.

But 00?

Pending an explanation of how the 00 is meant to honor somebody or something -- which is completely possibly -- 00 always seems to be to be a desperate cry for attention.

OO no, OJ!

DONUT 8: Comedy Central ...

An open message to all these people who want to challenge LeBron James or Michael Jordan to one-on-one contests: If you really had that capability, wouldn't you, like, be playing in the NBA instead of working at Home Depot?

And yes, that applies, too, to Grizzlies owner Robert Pera as he issues a challenge to Bobcats owner Jordan. I assume there is some greater good to be done here; charity, maybe? dismisses 1-on-1 challenge from as 'comical' But if you are Jordan, you have every right to find it tiresome and you have every right to term it "comical.''

DONUT 9: Bread-and-butter ...

Yes, it's only the preseason, and the blocks that appear in the process of being stacked so sturdily can come crumbling down should the illusion falter. But while watching the Mavs' Monday preseason loss to the Magic, it's hard not to begin the wonder of 'what if' - especially as it applies to Dirk and Monta, the two-man game and some delicious bread and butter.

DONUT 10: Welcome, Social Club! ...

We welcome to the DB.com family Oak Cliff Social Club, voted Dallas' best "dive bar'' and located in the heart of the Bishop Arts District.

This "place for local people to come without paying tourist prices" is anchored by a 40-foot, oak-backed, Brazilian black granite bar, and a "garage" area featuring couches, TVs, and twin pool tables. Local beers and home-style pizza will do the trick before or after the Mavs game.

Thanks to Oak Cliff Social Club for supporting the Mavs, DB.com and so many positives things happening in the Bishop Arts District!
