Monta Ellis Q-&-A Mavs Donuts
Posted Sep 27, 2013

Monta Ellis says joining the Mavs is his 'best opportunity to be on that elite stage. They’re a great organization. They’ve got a Hall-of-Fame player like Dirk ... as long as we can get on the same page and jell, we’re gonna be great.' The Monta Ellis Q-&-A (with Ben & Skin) in Mavs Donuts!

DONUT 1: The Monta Ellis Primer ...

Colleagues Ben & Skin on 105.3 The Fan conduct a fun sit-down with Monta Ellis (you can hear the audio of the visit here) in which the issues discussed range from Dallas Mavericks basketball to social media to Monta's tennis prowess.

There will be other days to analyze how Monta fits into the team concept and even how Monta fits financially . But today's a day for Monta fun ...

DONUT 2: Monta on his decision to join the Mavs ...

“Out of all the options I had, I felt this was the best chance and the best opportunity to be on that elite stage. They’re a great organization. They’ve got a Hall-of-Fame player like Dirk so, with the defense focused on me I can expand my game a little bit more.
"The city is great, it’s great for my family, my kids (a 4-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter) love it with school. So I just felt like it was the right fit for me and I’m just happy to be a Maverick.”

DONUT 3: Monta on working with Carlisle ...

“He came and met me (for a 'recruiting trip') down in H-town. I was working out in Houston ... and as soon as I signed, Coach (Carlisle) came out with me for a couple days and we worked on a few things, anything that would help better my chances percentage-wise of shooting it. A little mechanics I had to fix on my jump shot. My ball was going to the right a little bit. We built a relationship.

"For him to do that really set in well with me because I never had a coach do that and show me what I can improve on. And he came out and did that, took the time out. I didn’t expect him to come down and spend a couple days with me to do that. I can see he’s very hands-on with his players.”

(Here's our exclusive visit with Carlisle on this very topic, building a relationship with new players like Ellis.)

DONUT 4: Follow the Mavs on Twitter ...

Follow the Mavs on Twitter: Mike Fisher, Chuck Perry , David Lord and Michael Dugat keep you up-to-the-minute informed on all things Mavs!

DONUT 5: Monta on teaming with Dirk ...
“I think we’re gonna do wonderful together. I think he’s gonna help my game out tremendously and I think I’m gonna take a lot of pressure off of him as well. I think my ability to get to the basket and his ability to shoot the ball, we’re gonna have the defense in a bind.''

DONUT 6: Monta on pairing with Calderon ...

“He can really shoot the ball. He’s a pass-first point guard. I haven’t had one of those since 2007 when Baron Davis was on the (Warriors) team. With his ability to shoot the ball, if I can come in and get to the basket and make the defense move and find open guys, I think it’s going to be a great tandem between us.''

DONUT 7: Monta on the doubters of the pairing ...

"A lot of people are doubting us. It’s gonna put a burn into me and hopefully (Calderon) and we’re gonna do everything we can to make this work and prove everybody wrong.”

DONUT 8: Monta on social media ...

No social media. I never got into it and I’m not gonna do it now. Really don’t have the time for it, to be honest with you. If I’m not at the gym I’m at home with my kids ... I just never got into the social media thing and my career, I’m getting older, so I’m definitely not gonna switch over to it now. I’m just gonna be quiet, go do my job and hopefully win.”

DONUT 9: Thanks, Red Rock! ...

Mavs games are on the horizon. Where to watch 'em on the biggest TV screen in Texas? Red Rock Bar & Grill.
DONUT 10: Monta on his other mates ...

"A lot of guys we (have) can do a lot, a lot of veteran guys like Shawn Marion, Vince Carter, Sam Dalembert, guys we brought in like Wayne Ellington, Calderon, it’s gonna open up a lot for the team and as long as we can get on the same page and jell, we’re gonna be great.''

DONUT 11: Monta on another sporting accomplishment ...

"I haven’t played tennis in 9 years. ... I played tennis from the sixth grade to my senior year in high school and never lost a single match. ... I just had a better opportunity going NBA than tennis. That was really my heart. I did tennis to really stay in shape and keep moving lateral. It was after basketball and just time for me to stay in shape.”

DONUT 12: The Final Word (and our thanks to Ben & Skin) ...

"I’m ready and excited for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started.”
