'You always have second thoughts, on everything you do,' concedes Donnie Nelson. 'It’s the nature of what you do. But hindsight is always 20-20. It’s like taking Normandy Beach; You can’t sit there halfway through and say, 'Oops, maybe we shoulda taken another beach!' A rapid-fire Q-and-A with the Mavs GM:
The GM of the Dallas Mavericks, Donnie Nelson, fields the questions of the day from 105.3 The Fan and DallasBasketball.com:
DONUT 1: On the subject of wanting to tank ...
Donnie: "Oh no, shoot. We hopefully don’t ever have to go back to that (lottery level). We’re trying to get in (the playoffs) and have all the pistons hitting at the same time. Is (failing to do so) a possibility? Yes. But we’re all about winning here.''
DONUT 2: On the state of the Mavs at 21-28 ...
Donnie: "It’s been a weird year, with lots of new faces and Dirk Nowitzki
being out, so we’re at a different place, fighting for our playoff lives. We’ve got to win some games here.''
DONUT 3: On the team 'taking its licks' this year as part of the plan ...
Donnie: "Yeah, the licks were not intended to come like this this year. You never know when you bring in nine new faces how they will all come together. But the plan was to have a solid year and a rebuilding year and to be opportunistic this summer. With Dirk being out and with all the new faces, we’ve had a tough go of it.''
DONUT 4: On fixing things during this homestand ...
Donnie: "The good is, we’ve been in a lot of these games and given these teams all they can handle on the road, with all the overtime games. But the balls aren’t bouncing our way or we’re not playing well down the stretch.
"Look, we’re in the dogfight of our lives here. We’ve got to get everybody pulling in the right direction. The good news is, we’re resilient. We’ve got a lot of bounce-back in us.''
DONUT 5: On our speculation that Dallas will be a 'seller' at the trade deadline ...
Donnie: "It's a fair question but hard to answer right now because there are so many moving parts involved. (By the time Feb. 21 rolls around) where are we in terms of a team? If we win a good chunk of games during this homestand. ... Those are factors. We like the guys in the locker room. We want to make it work. It's a good mix of veterans and youth. We just need to win these games.''
DONUT 6: For our thoughts on the State of the Mavs ...
The DB.com Mavs Podcast addresses many of these issues and more!
DONUT 7: On envisioning a deadline trade that puts Dallas 'over the top' ...
Donnie: "If you mean 'over the top' in terms of getting a playoff spot? Really, that’s not our focus. Our focus is championships. Look at the view from 10,000 feet and that's always the question that Mark (Cuban) wants answered: 'What's going to make us a championship team?'
"And when you approach it that way, there are sometimes going to be ripples along the way to that.''

DONUT 9: On allowing himself to have second thoughts on Tyson Chandler ...
Donnie: "You always have second thoughts, on everything you do. It’s the nature of what you do. But hindsight is always 20-20. It’s like taking Normandy Beach; You can’t sit there halfway through and say, 'Oops, maybe we shoulda taken another beach!'
"You have the information you have. And having gathered that, you do what you think is best for the franchise. We picked the path, we liked it, we like it now, and we still think it will work out.''
DONUT 10: Thanks to our sponsors! ...
A tip of the cap of appreciation to Frisco Party Station and
Red Rock Bar & Grill! They help make DB.com what it is ... thanks, guys!
DONUT 11: Is Dirk losing a step? … ...
Donnie: "I wouldn’t think so. He’s 7-feet, smart and can shoot it and know how to play. A guy who knows how to play, knows how to keep his body right, he can play forever in this league. It's easier to hide a 7-footer than it is a point guard (like Jason Kidd) who has to spend all night chasing around the fastest athletes in the world. It’s in the cards for Dirk to play as long as he wants to and certainly to do so at a high level for the next couple of years.''
DONUT 12: The Final Word ...
Donnie: "You guys (the media) are in charge of the woulda-coulda-shoulda. But we feel (the post-CBA dismantling) was the right move for us. And we’re going to stick to our guns.''
