Childress? Are Mavs Still Roster-Shopping?

By this point in the off-season, the roster building is more-or-less behind us for everyone. Yet this year, there seem to be lots of 'name' players still floating out there, looking for a job. Childress? Hettsheimeir? Are the Mavs still roster-shopping? We explore in Donuts. ...

DONUT 1: Childress? Hettsheimeir? Are Mavs Still Roster-Shopping? ...

From a Hoopshype tweet: Josh Childress to work out for Nets + Mavs, Cavs interested in Brazilian big man?

From a Hoopshype rumor-page note: Mavericks ... are very interested in Rafael Hettsheimeir. Dallas is the team most interested in him. ... Mavericks ... are offering Hettsheimeir a one-year contract. Only 50 percent of the contract would be guaranteed.

DONUT 2: How to read that? ...

We mean to ask "how to read that?'' in more ways than one, as you are about to see.

The Mavs currently have 15 players with guaranteed contracts, which is the regular-season limit.

But ...

A) You can waive a player with such a contract if you want to (you just have to pay him anyhow).

B) Alternatively, if you had a need/desire, you could trade someone away and open up roster room.

C) In the regular season, the limit is 15 players, so it's not smart to amass more than 15 guaranteed contracts (since you'll inevitably have to get rid of the excess, perhaps by simply paying money to a player who you waive). But until the season starts, you can have as many as 20 players on your roster. Over the years, the Dallas Mavericks have at times carried "camp bodies'' for preseason work.

Is that what's in play here?

DONUT 3: The big "if'' ...

If we can find that these news items are valid? We could characterize them as low-risk fliers under consideration for the Mavs. ... or at least we could do so with Childress. At this point, any player out there is probably signing for the minimum, with little-to-no guaranteed money. (For example, former phenom Blatche will reportedly be signing a minimum-salary deal next week with no guaranteed money, just hoping to latch on to a job.)

But a half-guaranteed contract for the foreign prospect Rafael Hettsheimeir? Doesn't seem to fit. Didn't we already cover this is July enough to assume the ship has sailed on any interest in him?

DONUT 4: The "Make-Good Deal'' ...

We suppose we could see the Mavs give a player or three an invite to training camp on a make-good deal (non-guaranteed contract) like they did Brian Cardinal and several others a couple years ago. Bringing in "The Custodian'' with no real hopes paid fine dividends; that's why we keep our eyes and minds open here.

But again, for such a player to actually make the team, it has to be enough of an upgrade for them to throw a contract in the trash (unless they have a trade pending).

DONUT 5: Thanks, Esparza's! ...

The gang at Esparza's in Grapevine loves that it's Cowboys season and the Cowboys love Esparza's, too! Let me put it this way: You never know who you'll see out on Esparza's famous front porch! Thanks for your sponsorship, Esparza's!

DONUT 6: "Name'' players ...

Unlike Rafael Hettsheimeir, Childress has a recognizable name. (Not that "Rafael Hettsheimeir'' doesn't count as a "name player'' of sorts!) But Josh had been a total spare since his return from Europe. In Atlanta, pre-Europe, he was up-and-coming and ready to break out ... a player maybe on a similar arc with teammate Josh Smith. ... But now, he's just a guy. At this point it's likely he's simply looking for just such an aforementioned invite.

Listen live here for some Fish on Football and for breaking Mavs stuff, too ... throughout today and every day ... and we'll take you inside the teams in every possible way!

DONUT 8: Follow D-Lord and Fish and the Mavs on Twitter ...

DONUT 9: LIBB ...

In recent years this Mavs regime regularly takes a stab at guys who used to be "good" or at players with failed "potential" and see if they land some lightning in a bottle "Lighting In A Bottle Boys!''_ and if these rumors have any substance, that's probably how they would fit.

In other words, perhaps the Mavs are open to finding candidates to be this year's DeSagana Diop, Brandon Bass, JJB, Gerald Green, Antoine Wright, Tim Thomas, Ian Mahinmi, Yi Jianlian, Brandon Wright, or Kelenna Azubuike.

LIBB can work.

DONUT 10: It's low-risk, except ...

Even though bringing a non-guaranteed camp player is very low-risk, neither the Mavs nor such a player is going to go through the process unless there's a need in some way, and a chance it could work out if things fall right.

Is there a need here?

Rafael Hettsheimeir as a fifth center who you'd never play? No need.

Josh Childress? Some might think the Mavs could indeed need help at SF. Vince is the backup behind Marion, and/or the rookie Crowder. We like Carter better at SG (a very crowded position for the Mavs) than at SF. ... and at this early stage, how can we not like Crowder at least due to his motor?

DONUT 11: A closer look ...

But wait a sec. Let's take another look at those two stories. ...

From a Hoopshype tweet: Josh Childress to work out for Nets + Mavs, Cavs interested in Brazilian big man?

That "+'' sign is a tricky devil. Mavs officials kinda looked at DB.com crossed-eyed when we asked about Childress and now we know why: What Hoopshype meant was: : Josh Childress to work out for Nets .... AND IN OTHER NEWS ... Mavs, Cavs interested in Brazilian big man?

See the difference?

From a Hoopshype rumor-page note: Mavericks ... are very interested in Rafael Hettsheimeir. Dallas is the team most interested in him. ... Mavericks ... are offering Hettsheimeir a one-year contract. Only 50 percent of the contract would be guaranteed.

Well, we clicked the link. And yeah, there's the story, linked to on Friday, Sept. 7 ... and the dateline on the original story is July 9. Yeah, July 9, back when Hettsheimeir was actually a name worthy of being in the news. (Looks like our buddy Sefko was lured by the same bait, as he spent part of last night asking the Mavs the same Hettsheimeir questions we asked. ... we both wasted a night chasing a "fresh'' story with a shelf life that actually expired almost two months ago.)

DONUT 12: The Final Word ...

It's a fact we know, and it's a fact we'd like to ignore, but we cannot.

By this point in the off-season, the roster building is more-or-less behind us for everyone. Yet this year, there seem to be lots of "name" players still floating out there, looking for a job. Agents with such a player will try to get their unemployed guy any attention they can. ... So names get shoved into the spotlight when they don't deserve it. Or reporters push an angle to fill a space (or in one of these cases, put a comma and a plus sign in a confusing space).

The Mavs may add a body. But we think their roster-building is largely done ... And that the Childresses and Hettsheimeirs and most anyone like them are highly unlikely to find themselves jobs in Dallas.

Nevertheless, this exercise is worth the effort, we think. The above "guidelines'' are important to the reader, for this team and this year or for any team and in any year.

Just maybe not to this team in this year with these guys.
