Nellie's 'Wonderful Life' In Mavs Donuts
Posted Aug 31, 2012

Mentoring the Mavs kids ... 'It's A Wonderful Life,' says Nellie between poker hands ... No, we're not laughing at the Sad-Sack Kings ... Here's the list of centers out on the street (and here's why the Mavs aren't ringing their phones off their hooks) ... Donuts!

DONUT 1: 'It's A Wonderful Life' ...

Finally, Nellie's time is here.
Next week he's heading to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Uncle Nellie is engaging in a bit of a media tour, speaking first with some Bay Area outlets about all the property he and Joy own in Maui, which is about to include a 4,000-square foot building for receptions after wedding ceremonies are held on his beach.

Nellie also has a 22-acre farm, makes and sells coffee and shaved-ice drinks, is about to market a dog food, and of course engages, as always, in his infamous poker games. On Maui, those games can include the likes of Willie Nelson, Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson.

What Nellie didn't mention in this series of interviews is the amount of time he also spends right here in Dallas, seeing the grandkids and such. No beach or farm here. But the celebrity poker games? Yes, Nellie oversees those, as he long has, right here in our fair city.

"It's a wonderful life," says it's-about-time Hall-of-Famer Don Nelson.

DONUT 2: Dirk's vert ...

Dirk is asked, "What is the best exercise to jump higher?”
The UberMan's answer: "You're askin' the wrong cat. Have you seen my vert?''

DONUT 3: Sad-Sack Kings ...

No, we do not think this is funny. In fact, we think it's rather sad.

The Kings, according to a Deadspin report, had "no online shop for nine-and-a-half weeks and nobody complained, or even appeared to realize it was gone. We're talking about the official team store here. ...''

The Maloof family has marketing savvy. And (despite relative struggles) money. There is no explanation for this other than disinterest on the part of the team and its fans. And that's sad.

DONUT 4: The Big Inspiration ...

The Lakers' Shaq jersey retirement ceremony will be held in LA on April 2, as part of the team's meeting with ... the visiting Mavericks.

Great. An inspired Lakers team ... double-inspired.

DONUT 5: Thanks, Esparza's! ...

The gang at Esparza's in Grapevine loves that it's Cowboys season and the Cowboys love Esparza's, too! Let me put it this way: You never know who you'll see out on Esparza's famous front porch! Thanks for your sponsorship, Esparza's!
DONUT 6: In case you missed it ...

Cuban's pro-Mavs-moves remarks measured by "potential'' and framed by the idea that he offered them in part to fuel barroom brawls across MavsLand.

DONUT 7: How much of a knucklehead is Andray Blatche? ...

We only know free-agent big man Andray Blatche by reputation. Well, and by his numbers, too, which last year with the Wiz were 16.8 points and 8.2 rebounds.

This is a center-starved league, and Blatche is not only capable of All-Star numbers, but is offering All-Star numbers ... and after getting amnestied, has no bites.

We've argued that Dallas could use another big body, and we're going to do some research on this over the weekend ... but it speaks volumes that this club -- and every other club -- has taken a pass here.

DONUT 8: Follow Fish and the Mavs on Twitter ...

DONUT 9: Eddie and Fin ...

Stuff we've talked about for months and weeks in this space has been made official recently, with Eddie Najera and Michael Finley both added to the Mavs executive wing.

But what's not "official'' are their titles.

Yes, Cuban's "organic management'' is back in play, with Eddie coaching the Legends (under the guidance of GM Del Harris) and assisting Donnie downtown. And Finley? Let's call him a "floater.'' Ro Blackman performs a similar role, helping in personnel, going onto the practice court for teaching, providing mentorship to young men ...

A "man's man,'' Carlisle calls Eddie, but it applies to all of these fellows. O.J. Mayo, Darren, you rookies ... pay attention to Najera, Fin and Ro. It's your best chance to become them.

DONUT 10: Oh, yeah - other bigs ...

The Dallas Mavericks once explored the idea of Mehmet Okur. He's on the street. But how much does he want, and for how long?

Chris Andersen? If you think Andray is a knucklehead ...

Sean Williams? Yes, this organization likes Sean Williams. But what they like him for is Frisco, where the Legends love having him around ... and maybe where his U.S. career is going to top out.

DONUT 11: Want more Mavs? ...

By the way, we take that same focus that we provide on the Mavs here on and apply it to the Mavs and the Cowboys on 105.3 The Fan. Listen live here for some Fish on Football and for breaking Mavs stuff, too ...

DONUT 12: The Final Word ...

A man names his clothing store "Hitler'' and because this is the internet, the mere mention of that name ends all conversation.

Pop into The Mavs Store! The 'UBERMAN' shirts are cool!
