Tuesday Mavs Donuts: Big-Fish Hunting

Posted Sep 4, 2012

Our countdown to Mavs camp begins ... A pinch of fan maturity is required to engage in Dallas 'big fish' talk ... The justification for the $60 mil high-school stadium ... Juwan raps ... Was Dallas' offseason almost 10 spots better than 'best'? ... Tuesday Morning Mavs Donuts!

DONUT 1: Welcome to the club ...

My buddy Eddie Sefko is getting killed in some quarters for his DMN series featuring possible Dallas Mavericks targets in 2013.
Welcome to the club, Edward.

What Eddie is doing with this project is exactly what DB.com has done (among a few other things, we hope you'll agree) for 13 years when it comes to Asset Management and talent acquisition: Spearheaded by our staff's reporting and by David Lord's understanding of the cap/CBA/rules, we've been able to pinpoint/predict/break stories on Mavs trades and signings.

Eddie's project is about at 2013 "big fish" and so the names of Andrew Bynum, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul must be addressed.

The more sensible and mature among us get that; we can differentiate between "pipedreams'' and "plans'' and we can understand that just as the Mavs would be remiss in not casting their line for "big fish,'' people like Sefko and myself would be remiss in not examining those possibilities.

The less sensible and less mature? They write me (and Sefko) what amounts to the electronic version of "hate mail.'' ... with the telltale sign being that they read as if they were scribbled in virtual crayon.

DONUT 2: Cowboys at Giants at 200 inches! ...

Massive watching party on Wednesday night, the NFL season-opener and it's Cowboys at Giants at Red Rock Bar and Grill! The biggest TV screen in Texas ... drink specials ... Barry and the Mavs-lovin', Cowboys-lovin' Red Rock staff to cater to your every sporting need ... Red Rock is DB.com's go-to spot in North Dallas for the big events ... swing in for a coldie on Wednesday night!

DONUT 3: Will they build a library? ...
No problem whatsoever with Allen building its football team a $60 million stadium. Non-Texans don't understand it, and frankly, when I talk to them about it I do so with a combination of pride and embarrassment. "Yes, it's excessive. But it's our choice to be excessive!''

My only hiccup here is how my usual support for the construction of college stadiums may or may not quite translate here. That college stadium creates revenue for the school; they build libraries with that money. (In theory, for sure, and in my experience, in practice, too.)

Here's hoping that Allen's stadium is something more than a shrine to football, that it enriches the students who are interested not in football but in band, languages, math and science. In other words, here's hoping that building that stadium helps build that library ...

Assuming kids even go to the library anymore.

DONUT 4: Juwan raps ...

Former Mav Juwan Howard, 39, is recording a rap album. No, it's probably not quite my cup of tea, but he's teamming with Rick Ross to get it done, so there's that.

I bet if I do a little research we might find that Juwan is old enough to be the first popular rapper ... that maybe he thought The Sugarhill Gang everything they knew.

DONUT 5: Thanks, Studio Movie Grill! ...

One of our most enjoyable entertainment experiences in the Metroplex? Studio Movie Grill! We're proud of DB.com's association with Studio Movie Grill and we're working on some Mavs-lovin' projects with them, too. Check 'em out!

DONUT 6: In case you missed it ...

The Mavs will eventually begin widely promoting the idea that Darren Collison is a Mavs-Killer over the course of his career. True or propaganda? We examine ...

DONUT 7: Is 10th OK? ...

CBSSports has the Mavs ranked at No. 10 in the NBA in terms of "how they helped themselves this summer.'' Is that OK? Yeah, except for our man Matt Moore's confounding statement about how he "docked (Dallas) twenty places for whiffing on Deron Williams and then Steve Nash.''

I'm terrible at math. But if CBS puts Dallas at 10, only after docking them 20 spots ... would that mean that Dallas with Deron or Nash would've been ranked 10 spots higher than No. 1?!

DONUT 8: Follow Fish and the Mavs on Twitter ...

DONUT 9: Who needs tickets? ...

Our guy Ryan at MavCowTickets knows the ins and outs of the Mavs, the Rangers, the Cowboys, the arenas, the opponents ... the works! For the most personal service in the business -- with no stupid add-on costs -- check him out and tell him The Fish sent you!

DONUT 10: Love Means Never Having To Say You're Sorry ...

So Dwight Howard takes out an ad in the Sunday paper expressing his love for Orlando. He loves Orlando, but ... "it's not you, it's me''? "You're the perfect city but just not perfect for me''?

DONUT 11: Want more Mavs? ...

DONUT 12: The Final Word ...

Mavs Media Day is Sept. 28. That's right ... just over three weeks away! It's been a long, hot summer but it's about to heat up even more as The 75-Member Staff covers Mavs Media Day like no one else can ... and we're happy to have you aboard!
