The 75-Member Staff is everywhere, of course. So when C.J. Miles - a DFW favorite son and pal to Deron Williams - shows up in Forney, Texas, we are there. What does C.J. say about the Mavs, Deron & Dirk and his own free agency Our takes in Mavs Donuts!
|
DONUT 1: The Daily Deron - Word from CJ Miles ...
The Dallas Mavericks can't say anything yet. Deron Williams himself is being careful, too. And I assume Dirk Nowitzki is this morning too stuffed with birthday cake to talk.
But C.J. Miles? A Mavs fan, DFW native, close pal of Deron's and himself a free agent?
He can talk. And on a recent swing through Forney, Texas, for a kids basketball camp, avid DB.com reader Chase -- a long-time 75-Member Staffer -- bumped into Miles.
When Chase asked Miles about the idea of a Dirk-Deron pairing in Dallas, C.J. said, "Hopefully!'' and expressed interest in coming home to the Mavs as well.
How much stock to put into a Mavs fan talking to a player at his basketball camp in Forney? Oh, quite a bit more stock than I put into the NY media talking to Jason Kidd about joining the Nets or the Knicks ... as you'll see below.
DONUT 2: Kendall meets his "family''? ...
North Carolina's Kendall Marshall was also in town recently, part of his workout with the Mavs, who might just be hoping that the BBIQ point guard is still available when they pick at No 17. Marshall's impressions of Big D and the AAC?
Well, he snapped these photos in the locker room, and obviously feels a certain level of comfort in there thanks to the dressing-stall representation of fellow Tar Heels Carter, Haywood and Wright.
"Family'' is how the kid captions the pictures. Just a week now until we discover whether the Mavs really like Kendall Marshall as much as he seems to like them.
DONUT 3: Notes from New York ...
Got a chance to visit the New York Public Library. ....
Given the state of literacy in this country, I'm assuming there are plans to turn the joint into a gigantic GameStop.
DONUT 4: Good try, NY media ...
It's journalistically dishonest, really. But it's the way it works now. So Jason Kidd gives an interview to the media (via conference call) in which he a) says he wants to return to the Mavs and b) is open to other ideas because he is, after all, a free agent.
And how do the NY papers spin Kidd's answers?
To paraphrase, "Kidd Likes Nets and Knicks.'' And then, almost as if it's in the tiniest font possible, near the bottom of the story, is the mention of Kidd's true desires. Which are to stay with the Mavs (and again "go to war'' with Dirk) and to team with his little brother Deron.
Did that technique sell y'all some papers? Congratulations, I guess.
P.S.: Here's the Kidd quote that didn't even make the NY paper that I checked.
"I really think Cuban is going to put the pieces together to give us an opportunity to get back to win it," Kidd said. "He put himself in position to go get two more studs."
THAT is news (except to DB.com readers who understand the whole idea of The 3D Blueprint, maybe.)
DONUT 5: How would Deron & Dirk work? ...
The advantages of bring Deron Williams home to Dallas? They seem self-evident. The advance-stats interpretation of how Deron and Dirk might work together, how Deron might serve in the Jet and Kidd roles simultaneously, how well Williams fits into Carlisle's desire to get a player who can push Dirk to being 'the Mavs' second-best player'? That stat interpretation is here for Premium Mavs Fans, a details breakdown of what plays Deron likes to run and how that might mesh with what Dirk likes to run.
It's two guys who average 22 points a game ... and one of them doing it from the creative launching pad of the point guard position ... check out the cutups of Deron's 57-point game and see the variety of ways he gets buckets:
Again, for the full Premium story on how Deron & Dirk would work, come inside!
DONUT 6: Thanks to Ryan at MavCowTickets! ...
This happens hundreds of times over the course of Mavs season, Rangers season, Cowboys season: I get a call wondering where a guy can get a game ticket at the last minute. It happened this week, a reader wanting two tickets to the NBA Finals in OKC. How to get it done? Call Ryan at MavCowTickets ... and it's done.
Personal service. Middle-man costs eliminated. A relationship with Ryan, who knows and loves the local teams just like you do. Thanks to the Ryan for the partnership and friendship with Mavs fans and DB.com!
DONUT 7: Follow Fish and the Mavs on Twitter! ...
DONUT 8: The Chris Brown/Drake/Tony Parker brawl ...
Don't know what Tony Parker was doing there. (It does seem "un-Spurs-like,'' though, no?) Do know what rappers Chris Brown and Drake were doing, though: Fighting in a weird manner, for Chris, anyway, who usually hits only girls.
DONUT 9: Dear Commissioner: Do it, already ...
I hear NBA commissioner David Stern trying to out-snark and out-double-talk everyone on a variety of subjects. ("When did you stop beating your wife?'' is a classic bit of lawyerly wordplay popular in, like, 1959). And here comes the Commish doing the same on the subject of flopping.
Dear David: Rather than campaigning like a kid trying to get elected to Student Council, and rather than trying to tell cornball flopping jokes of the sort that belong on popsicle sticks ... why don't you simply move to institute a 2012-13 rule regarding flopping? No press conferences, no combative interviews, no jousting ... just keep meeting in committee, and in the end serve the game by quietly and firmly instituting a rule.
Is that so hard?
DONUT 10: The 200-Inch TV screen! ...
The gang at Red Rock Bar & Grill know how to throw a party, that's all I'm sayin'. Live music, sports on the big-big-big screen, and crazy love for the Mavs. What more do you want?
DONUT 11: When is Delonte getting his own reality TV show? ...
Honestly, from tweeting his bill from Popeye's to taking photos of himself while seated on the toilet to his hourly lesson in Twitter Ebonics, there is more "reality TV'' on one day of Delonte West's Twitter feed than there is in 100 episodes of "Khloe & Lamar.''
"Be keepin it to trill but Danny go head and dig in the bone yard sis.'' - Delonte Talk.
Hollywood. Seacrest. Cuban. Somebody, get on this.
DONUT 12: The Final Word ...
Happy birthday, Chuck Cooperstein! He's a Premium Mavs Subscriber at DB.com, a frequent contributor to the site and the best radio play-by-play man in the business and really.
Dirk, will you please pass that man some leftover cake?
