OKLAHOMA CITY - In the postgame locker room, there they were: six Mavs on the floor in supine position, their heads sharing whispers and their legs pointing to the ceiling while wrapped in ice. While the 0-3 Mavs try to get out of the supine position, DB.com listens in on the whispers in our Quoteboard of Donuts:

DONUT 1: Awful and awesome collided to make a downright thrilling basketball game. Time nearly done, the Dallas Mavericks had crawled back in front with a Vince Carter trey, OKC had just shy of a second-and-a-half left, Durant fired a prayer from somewhere in Nebraska, ... and it somehow went in.

Thunder win, 104-102. We'll argue that this felt like a continuation of what Dallas was doing in OKC last May, and that's a good thing. Yet prepare to hear a lot of "No Defending Champion Has Ever Started The Season'' sound bites. ... but first, listen in on what DB.com heard on The 75-Member Staff's trip to OKC ...

DONUT 2: About that final possession -- Kevin Durant for 3 ...

"As a kid, of course you dream about hitting the game-winning shot in the NBA, so it's a dream come true." -Kevin Durant

“I had a great angle, and I knew it was right on target. I just didn't know the distance. But it looked good from the start.” -Coach Scott Brooks

"We play tough, we get to the fourth quarter, we put ourselves in a position to win. Nine times outta 10 we're gonna win that ballgame. Kevin Durant, helluva job." -Jason Terry

"Right now, he's probably the best player in the league with what he has been doing in the first four games." -Coach Rick Carlisle

DONUT 3: If you are a Mavs follower, get wisely addicted enough to sign up for our 7-day free trial and Premium Mavs Fandom! Nobody does it like The 75-Member Staff of DB.com … insight and intensity and inside your Dallas Mavericks!

DONUT 4: What Dirk called referee Scott Wall to earn himself a critical technical foul late ...

"Suck-Ass.'' - Dirk.

DONUT 5: A State of the State Statement ...

"This league is cruel.'' - Dirk.

DONUT 6: Any locker-room moping? ...

"I'd rather lose like this than get my butt kicked by 30 every night . . . with 66 games in 127 nights, you don't got time to feel sorry for yourself." -Brendan Haywood
Smile
DONUT 7: On conditioning and physical readiness of Dirk's "old and slow and out-of-shape'' Mavs ...

"Conditioning is something-- it's definitely physical, but a lot of it's mental. Can you push through your threshold when you get tired and be effective out on the floor? We're a team that prides itself on it and we've got a lotta extra guys that can get the job done." -Jason Terry

DONUT 8: Come follow Fish and the Mavs on Twitter!

DONUT 9: Reasons for optimism -- between the three of them, Dallas's centers punched out 19 points on 7-12 shooting and 9 rebounds ...

"[Haywood] set good screens and put himself in a position to be a recepient of the ball and make plays. Hey look, I liked our center position tonight." -Coach Rick Carlisle

“The way they played, we'll forget about Tyson real soon.'' - Jet

DONUT 10: New Guy No. 1 Lamar Odom -- as a Maverick he's 12-48 from the floor ...

"He's gonna get into a rhythm. Basketball's a rhythm sport. A guy like Lamar, he's like the type of player I am -- coming off the bench where you have to be ready to go. Right now, it's not happening for him but it will soon. And when he has that breakout game, it'll be something to build on." -Jason Terry

DONUT 11: New Guy No. 1, Vince Carter -- whose game-locking three got upstaged by Durant's buzzer-beater ...

"I can't tell you how impressed I am with Vince Carter after three games . . . He is willing to do anything we ask of him to help us win. He was willing to come off the bench, no problem. I had him come in for one possession when Dirk was out. He hit a big shot, then came right back out of the game. Then he's ready at the end to knock in that shot. That's what we need. That's what we need, and we need some other guys to step up that aren't getting it done." -Coach Rick Carlisle

"I'm ready to play when he calls my number. I don't want to be a statue, I want to be a player. On this team it's not about how many points you score, it's how effective you are, move the ball, make plays." -Vince Carter

DONUT 12: Progress report, or at least it wasn't another blowout ...

"We gotta make our breaks. Right now, basketball gods aren't on our side and we gotta get them on our side . . . We're making some strides, we forced a lot of turnovers, but making progress and being the team you need to be are two different things." -Coach Rick Carlisle

Smile

"Encouraging. Cuz if you looked at those first two games; that wasn't the Mavericks. Tonight this was the Mavericks . . . This was an encouraging game for us. Yes, we want to win, but tomorrow [at home against Toronto] is a big game for us.'' -Jason Terry

"I like the fight we showed . . . we're trying to get up and play together and fight for each other out there, and that's what's gonna get it done in this league." -Dirk Nowitzki
