Jet's 'Stranglehold' On 6th-Man Award Donuts

Jet's 'Stranglehold' On 6th-Man Award Donuts

'I've put a stranglehold back on that Sixth Man title,' Jason Terry says, 'and hopefully pretty soon people will start talking about how I'm the best Sixth Man in the business again.' Jet, we'll not only talk about it - we'll Donutize it. Where does Jet REALLY stack up in the Sixth Man competition?

DONUT 1: Is Jet the NBA's best Sixth Man? As you can see above, he certainly has HIS vote.

Smile

DONUT 2: The competition? Jamal Crawford, Lamar Odom, Thaddeus Young, and, yeah, the Dallas Mavericks' own Jason Terry. Some may argue that Glen Davis should be in the conversation but his stats do not say so as his plus/minus numbers are all negative and his PER and stats are worse than all the other contenders.

DONUT 3: Let's handle this like the Donut-making professionals we are. The stats and competition:

DONUT 4: So is there a "stranglehold'' in there somewhere?

DONUT 5: Lamar Odom has the best stats of the group across the board. The big question mark for Odom is the fact that he has started 32 of 55 games thus far—but if he does continue to come off the bench he will be eligible for the Sixth Man Award.

DONUT 6: Terry and Crawford have almost identical stats, with Terry having the edge in assists and Crawford getting to the line at a higher rate.

DONUT 7: Young has great stats (PER of 17.4, plus/minus of +8.44, Adjusted plus/minus of +9.93, 16.4 pts/36, 7.1 rebounds/36, and 0.539 field goal percentage) but his team has the worst record of the group and he plays the least minutes per game in the group. This will certainly factor into the voters thinking.

DONUT 8: Let's try to tally this up: If Odom finishes the season coming off the bench and the Lakers continue to play well it seems that Odom would be the frontrunner for the award. Terry and Crawford seem to be neck-and-neck for second place and therefore much of it will come down to how their teams finish and how they play individually in the final 30-or-so games of the season.

DONUT 9: Now, Terry can make the argument that his entire bench is part of the Sixth Man discussion ... so he will.

"As a whole our bench, pretty soon people will start noticing," Terry said. "We're second to none. We're the best bench in basketball. You look at what JJ's been able to do with his penetration, the impact that 'Trix makes on both ends of the floor and then my ability to score baskets at will off the bench, I don't see any other team doing that."

Smile

DONUT 10: We're going to get a chance to see that bench depth in action tonight, Kings at Mavs ... Barea might be out sick. Roddy B is set to make his debut. And Jet is right in the sense that the Mavs have followed Rick Carlisle's "Be Ready'' direction dutifully ... so many guys have so often been so ready for this 38-16 team.

But ...

DONUT 11: Jet, this is not a "team'' honor -- even if you are "scoring baskets at will.''

DONUT 12: At some point, Jet's vocal hyperbole goes from being "eye-catching'' to "funny'' to "empty.'' On Monday and Tuesday, he issued so many official proclamations of the Mavs' greatness, Roddy B's greatness, his own greatness ... we could hardly keep up.

DONUT 13: So, no, Jet. There is no "stranglehold.'' But you are in the conversation ... and of course, when it comes to "conversation,'' none of the other Sixth Man candidates can come close to you!
